Ice Maker Not Making Ice

When the freezer is cold, the question is whether water is arriving — not whether the appliance can freeze.

What this usually means

An ice maker needs three things: a freezer cold enough, water arriving, and a signal that the bin has room. A cold freezer settles the first immediately, which is why the useful question is almost always about the other two. Most no-ice calls end at a shut-off valve, a frozen fill tube, an inlet valve or a bin arm that has been knocked out of position.

Five observations that narrow it

Answer these before anyone visits. Each one removes a whole branch of the diagnosis, and they cost nothing.

  1. Is the freezer itself properly cold?

  2. Is the bin arm down, or is the sensor window clear of frost?

  3. Does the dispenser give water, even if it gives no ice?

  4. Is there a small plug of ice visible in the fill tube at the back of the mould?

  5. When did it last make ice, and has the water filter been changed since?

Causes, cheapest first

In roughly the order a technician rules them out. The expensive answer is at the bottom because it is usually the last one true, not the first.

Bin arm or level sensor

An arm knocked into its off position, or a sensor obscured by frost, tells the machine the bin is full. It then works exactly as designed and makes nothing.

Water shut-off closed

none

Worth ruling out first, particularly after any plumbing work in the house.

Frozen fill tube

low

Water that freezes in the tube before reaching the mould blocks every subsequent fill. It usually points back at a fill valve that is dribbling rather than shutting cleanly.

Water inlet valve

low to moderate

If the dispenser gives no water either, the valve is the common point and the whole supply side is implicated.

Restricted water filter

lowest

A filter past its life reduces flow enough to produce small or hollow cubes before it stops ice altogether.

When water arrives and the freezer is cold, the module itself is the remaining answer, and it is replaced as a unit rather than rebuilt.

Check these before you book

  • Check the bin arm is down and the sensor window is clear.
  • Try the water dispenser; whether it works splits the diagnosis in half.
  • Confirm the water shut-off behind or under the unit is open.
  • Note when the filter was last changed.
  • Empty the bin and check no cubes have fused into a single block.
