What this work is

A door that does not pull itself the last inch admits warm humid air continuously. That frosts the evaporator, which blocks the airflow, which arrives as a cooling complaint — so the door is checked early on faults that have nothing obviously to do with it. On panel-ready and dispenser-equipped doors the weight involved is substantial, and hinge and closer wear is a genuine mechanical repair rather than a strip of rubber.

How the visit goes

In order. Each step exists to avoid paying for the one after it.

  1. Test the seal all the way round rather than at the place it looks worst.

  2. Check the appliance is level, or very slightly tilted back, because most doors are designed to close under their own weight.

  3. Distinguish a tired gasket from a worn hinge from a door that is simply catching on a bin.

  4. On a French door pair, watch the mullion flap fold, because two doors have to seal against each other as well as against the frame.

  5. Refit a cabinet panel level with its neighbours; on a built-in that alignment is part of the job, not an extra.

Questions

Can a door seal really make the fridge warm?
Yes, and it is one of the most common ways it happens. A gap of a few millimetres is a continuous inflow of humid room air, and the evaporator ices up trying to deal with it.
Do you have to take the cabinet panel off?
For hinge and closer work, yes. Putting it back level with the cabinets on either side is part of finishing the repair.
