Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working

What this usually means

The dispenser is the visible end of a chain that starts at the house shut-off, runs through a filter and an inlet valve, crosses into the door, and ends at a switch under a paddle. Which link has failed usually shows in the pattern: nothing at all, a trickle, or water that arrives but tastes or smells wrong. Whether the ice maker still works narrows it further, because the two share most of that chain.

Five observations that narrow it

Answer these before anyone visits. Each one removes a whole branch of the diagnosis, and they cost nothing.

  1. Nothing at all, or a slow trickle?

  2. Does the ice maker still make ice?

  3. When was the water filter last changed?

  4. Is the freezer very cold, or has it been set colder than usual recently?

  5. Does the dispenser light or display respond when the paddle is pressed?

Causes, cheapest first

Frozen supply line in the door

Water inlet valve

Dispenser switch or control

If nothing responds at all when the paddle is pressed, the fault is at the door rather than in the plumbing.

Kinked or crushed supply line

Common after a unit has been pulled out and pushed back, which makes recent movement a useful thing to mention.

Check these before you book

  • Change or reseat the water filter and run several quarts through before judging the result.
  • Try the ice maker and note whether it still works.
  • Check the shut-off valve behind or under the appliance is fully open.
  • Check whether the freezer has been set unusually cold.
  • Look behind the unit for a crushed or kinked line if it has been moved recently.
