Refrigerator Leaking Water on the Floor
Where the water appears matters more than how much of it there is.
What this usually means
A refrigerator handles water in three separate systems, and a leak belongs to exactly one of them. Defrost meltwater runs to a drain and then to a pan. Supply water runs to the ice maker and the dispenser. Condensate forms wherever warm air meets cold surfaces. Water at the front of the appliance, water underneath it and water inside it are three different faults, and telling them apart before the visit saves most of the diagnosis.
Five observations that narrow it
Answer these before anyone visits. Each one removes a whole branch of the diagnosis, and they cost nothing.
Is the water at the front, underneath, or inside the compartment?
Is it clear and cold, or does it have ice in it?
Does it appear continuously, or in an episode every several hours?
Is there an ice maker or a water dispenser plumbed in?
Is there ice building up in the bottom of the freezer, under the drawer or the bottom shelf?
Causes, cheapest first
In roughly the order a technician rules them out. The expensive answer is at the bottom because it is usually the last one true, not the first.
Blocked defrost drain
lowThe most common leak by far. Meltwater that cannot reach the drain freezes into a sheet under the freezer floor and then spills forward onto the kitchen floor. The tell is ice under the bottom drawer.
Cracked or overflowing drain pan
lowThe pan under the unit collects meltwater to evaporate it. A cracked pan leaks directly underneath, with no ice involved.
Water supply line or inlet valve
low to moderateSupply water leaks steadily rather than in episodes, and the puddle keeps returning within minutes of being wiped up.
Water line at the door hinge
moderateOn French door and side-by-side layouts the line crosses the hinge and flexes every time the door opens. A seep there shows at the front of the appliance rather than beneath it.

Check these before you book
- Note exactly where the water appears and tell us when you call.
- Pull out the bottom freezer drawer and look for a sheet of ice underneath it.
- If a water filter was changed recently, check it is seated and locked.
- Find the water shut-off for the refrigerator and make sure you can reach it.
- Wipe the floor dry and time how long it takes to return.
How urgent is this?
Not a food-safety problem, but a persistent leak under a refrigerator will damage flooring and subfloor. If the water is coming from the supply rather than from defrost, close the shut-off valve until the visit.
