What this work is

A refrigerator has an evaporator fan that pushes cold air out of the freezer into the rest of the cabinet, and a condenser fan that carries heat away from the coil. They fail in ways that look nothing alike. A dead evaporator fan gives a cold freezer beside a warm refrigerator and a cabinet that has gone quieter than it used to be. A dead condenser fan gives a unit that runs without ever catching up. Both are among the cheaper repairs on the list.

How the visit goes

In order. Each step exists to avoid paying for the one after it.

  1. Separate the two: open the freezer door and note whether a fan stops, because the evaporator fan does and the condenser fan does not.

  2. Check for the obvious mechanical causes first — frost against a blade, debris in the housing, a blocked grille.

  3. Replace the motor and confirm the airflow at the vent rather than confirming the fan turns.

  4. Clear the condenser while the back is open, because a fan that failed once in a matted coil will do it again.

Questions

My fridge got quieter and then got warm. Is that related?
Almost certainly. The evaporator fan is one of the few things you hear from inside the cabinet, and a refrigerator that has gone quiet is usually one that has stopped moving air.
Is a noisy fan urgent?
Not usually, but a blade catching frost is telling you about the defrost system as well, and that one does end as a cooling failure.
