What this usually means

When the freezer holds its temperature and the fresh-food compartment does not, the appliance is still making cold and has stopped delivering it. That rules out the sealed system almost entirely. On nearly every design one evaporator serves both compartments, and the upper section is fed by a fan through a duct, sometimes metered by a damper — so the fault lies in that delivery path.

Five observations that narrow it

Answer these before anyone visits. Each one removes a whole branch of the diagnosis, and they cost nothing.

  1. Can you hear a fan inside the freezer when the door has been shut for a while?

  2. Is there frost covering the back panel inside the freezer?

  3. Is there any air movement at the vent inside the fresh-food compartment?

  4. Has the freezer become noticeably colder than usual, or noisier?

  5. Did the change follow a period when a door was left open, or a very full load?

Causes, cheapest first

In roughly the order a technician rules them out. The expensive answer is at the bottom because it is usually the last one true, not the first.

Evaporator fan failed

The fan that pushes cold air up into the fresh-food compartment has stopped. The freezer stays cold because the cold is being made right next to it; the upper section gets nothing.

Frost blocking the evaporator

A defrost failure lets frost grow over the coil until air cannot pass. The freezer, sitting closest, is the last thing to suffer.

Where a damper meters the air, a stuck one cuts the fresh-food side off entirely while the freezer runs exactly as intended.

Check these before you book

  • Move food away from the vents at the back of the fresh-food compartment.
  • Listen for the fan with the freezer door closed, then open it and listen again.
  • Look for frost on the back panel inside the freezer and mention what you see when you call.
  • Check both temperature settings rather than just the one that seems wrong.
  • Note how many days ago it started; this one usually drifts rather than fails outright.
