Undercounter Refrigerator Repair
A single 15 to 24 inch unit under the worktop — front-vented, tightly enclosed, and easily starved of air.
What this type is
An undercounter refrigerator fits into the run of base cabinets, typically 15, 18 or 24 inches wide, and vents entirely through its own front grille because there is no air behind it. Refrigerator drawers belong to the same family. The confined space is the defining condition: almost every complaint on this type comes back at some point to how the unit breathes.
How to tell yours is one
- It sits under the worktop, in the cabinet run, rather than standing on its own.
- There is a grille along the bottom or top of the door, because it must vent forward.
- It is a single compartment, either refrigeration or freezing, not both.
- Often panel-ready or finished in stainless to match the surrounding cabinetry.
What fails on this type
Not a general list of refrigerator faults. These are the ones this design produces because of how it is built and where it is installed.
Blocked front ventilation
The grille is the unit's only air supply and its only exhaust. A toe-kick fitted flush, a rug pushed against it or a grille packed with dust makes the compressor run continuously and the compartment drift warm.
Condensate management
A unit sitting inside cabinetry has nowhere convenient to send condensate, so it evaporates it. When that pan or its heater fails, water appears in the cabinet floor rather than under the appliance.
Door hinge and closing under a heavy panel
A short door carrying a full cabinet panel puts a lot of leverage on a small hinge. Doors that stand slightly open are the most common cause of a warm undercounter unit.
Outdoor and garage installations
Units installed outdoors or in unconditioned space are working far outside the range they were rated for, and a unit not rated for it will behave badly in a way that is not a fault.
Getting at it
Access is the thing that most distinguishes one refrigerator type from another, and it is what decides how a visit is planned.
- The unit slides out of its opening on the floor, so the toe kick and sometimes the door come off first.
- The cabinet opening dimensions matter as much as the appliance dimensions; a unit that never had its required clearance will keep failing after every repair.
- Panel-ready doors are removed and refitted, and alignment with the neighbouring cabinet fronts is part of the work.
- Water supply, where there is one, runs through the cabinet base and needs a reachable shut-off.
Repair or replace
Undercounter units are built into the cabinetry and sized to the opening, so a replacement has to match both the dimensions and the panel. That constraint, rather than the price of the appliance, is usually what makes repair the sensible answer.

Refrigerator Not Cooling
The compartment is warm but the appliance still has power and still makes noise.
Refrigerator Running Constantly
The compressor never cycles off, and the cabinet may still be holding temperature.

Water under the crisper drawers, or a sheet of ice in the bottom of the freezer.
Refrigerator Door Not Sealing
A gap of a few millimetres is enough to frost an evaporator and run a compressor continuously.
Refrigerator Making a Loud Noise
Buzzing, clicking, rattling or knocking — the kind of noise narrows it more than the volume does.
Frost Building Up in the Refrigerator
Ice on the back wall, around the door, or over the whole freezer — and each location means something different.
