What it means
These indicate the defrost cycle is running, which every automatic-defrost refrigerator does several times a day. On most models it clears on its own within an hour or two. It becomes worth a visit only when it does not clear, or when it keeps returning and the compartment is drifting warm — at that point the message has stopped describing a normal cycle and started describing one that will not complete.
What to do now
- Note the time. If it clears within a couple of hours, nothing is wrong.
- Check whether the compartment is still holding temperature while it shows.
- If it returns repeatedly, look for frost on the back panel inside the freezer and say what you see when you call.
- Do not unplug and replug repeatedly; that restarts the cycle rather than finishing it.
What not to do
Do not read a normal defrost indication as a failed appliance. The fault, when there is one, is the cycle not completing — not the message appearing.
A code is a lead, not a verdict
The same characters mean different things on different brands, and sometimes on different generations of the same brand. Two things make a code worth acting on: the exact characters, and the model number they came from. Without the second, the first is a guess.
Write the code down before you reset anything, photograph the display rather than transcribing it, and note whether the appliance is still cooling while it shows. That last answer decides whether this waits for a scheduled visit or not.
