What this usually means

A completely dead refrigerator is either not being fed or has lost its control. The distinction is quick to make and it matters, because half of these calls are resolved at the outlet, the breaker or a GFCI that has tripped. Only once power at the outlet is confirmed does the appliance itself come into question.

Five observations that narrow it

Answer these before anyone visits. Each one removes a whole branch of the diagnosis, and they cost nothing.

  1. Is the interior light on when you open the door?

  2. Does the display or control panel show anything at all?

  3. Has the breaker tripped, or is the outlet on a GFCI that has tripped?

  4. Does another appliance work in the same outlet?

  5. Was the unit moved, or was anything plugged in nearby, just before it stopped?

Causes, cheapest first

In roughly the order a technician rules them out. The expensive answer is at the bottom because it is usually the last one true, not the first.

Breaker, GFCI or outlet

Start relay or overload on the compressor

Produces a unit with lights working and a compressor that clicks and stops rather than starting.

Demonstration or showroom mode

Some models ship with a mode that lights the display and runs nothing. It is worth ruling out on a recently delivered appliance.

Check these before you book

  • Check the breaker and any GFCI outlet on the circuit.
  • Plug something else into the same outlet.
  • Check the cord is fully seated at the appliance and at the wall.
  • Note whether the interior light works; it separates dead-from-supply from dead-from-control.
  • On a newly delivered unit, check the manual for a demonstration mode.
