What this work is

A refrigerator rejects heat through a coil, and on a built-in it breathes through a single grille above the doors. When that path is matted over, the compressor runs continuously, the cabinet drifts warm, and everything downstream of it works harder than it was built to. A great many of the calls on this site are avoidable, and this is the visit that avoids them. It is also the moment to check the door seals and clear the drain while the panels are already off.

How the visit goes

In order. Each step exists to avoid paying for the one after it.

  1. Clear the condenser and the grille properly, which on a built-in is the whole air supply.

  2. Check clearances, because a unit pushed tight against a wall cannot be cleaned into working.

  3. Test the door seals all the way round and level the appliance if it is not.

  4. Clear the defrost drain before it blocks rather than after it floods.

  5. Note the model number and what the appliance is, so the next visit starts further along.

How often should a built-in be serviced?
More often than most owners expect, because the grille above the doors is its only air path. A matted grille is behind a large share of the calls about units running constantly.
Is this worth doing on a freestanding unit?
Yes, though it is less critical: a freestanding unit has air behind it, so a dusty coil degrades it rather than strangling it.
